C18 – Blue white Kraak style plate

Qing dynasty

Kangxi period, 1662 – 1722

A Chinese blue and white “Kraak” style export dish, thinly potted with a medium hue and barbed rim decorated with alternating panels shaped in the form of lotus leaves surrounding aster flowers and each raised in relief, all against a characteristic cracked ice pattern background. Painted in the centre feature is a gōngshí (供石), or scholar’s rock formation surrounded by flying insects and peony flowers and foliage on a garden bed, framed by a double lined ring. The reverse shows the relief of the plate and is decorated with an outer ring of lotus petals surrounding the base and six auspicious objects on the rim. Marked to the base of the plate within a double ring border is characteristic Kangxi period floral mark.

Diameter 22 cm, height 3.5 cm
